Several newcomers attended MRATHS’ latest meeting and some decided to become members.

The meeting started with the sad news of the death of Graham Gibbs and a request for contributions of stories for his memorial service.

Hugh Williams summarised several of our many recent events: open garden, exhibition in Church Walk, Armed Forces Day, Defford Airfield Heritage Day, and QinetiQ Families Day. David Whitaker provided an update on the work with Malvern College on the planned long-term exhibition there and with their International Baccalaureate students before Hugh presented the life story of “The Factory” / EU building from construction in 1942 to demolition this year.

The main event was Darren Coe’s talk on Ground Imaging Radar – Seeing Through Clouds. Darren described the original wartime need for seeing at night and through clouds. He then drew on his extensive personal involvement to describe the technology and the various military and civil applications of synthetic aperture radar. Particularly fascinating were the images of Malvern and surrounding areas where the detail showed up striking features.

The evening completed with the customary informal discussions and shared memories over refreshments.
