OUR July meeting was a “Garden Party With a Difference”, the difference being that we didn’t hold it in a garden! Nevertheless we dressed for the occasion, and the hats and fascinators were a sight to behold, particularly Shirley Smith’s. Shirley was resplendent in her gardening hat, which she had hand-decorated with flowers and butterflies. It put some of the Ascot hats to shame!

Our speaker was Sally Turner who gave us lots of hints and a demonstration of how to make a professional-looking corsage. We then had the opportunity to get to grips with making our own from the array of flowers in all different colours, so we could match them with our outfits. It was great fun. June Mason gave the vote of thanks.

The business meeting followed. The Delegate’s Brighton Report by Elizabeth Hartwright was circulated. It was a really interesting report of the day. Activities are all continuing smoothly, notices of events were displayed, including an invitation from Powyke WI to a craft display in September. We had received thanks from the Church Group for providing help and refreshments for Peggy Johnson’s leaving tea party, which went well.

Birthday posies were distributed to Pauline McCallum, Stella Thornton, Janet Beats and Chris Haines. June Mason won the competition for a decorated cup and there was a lovely selection of prizes in Cath Hall’s Raffle.

This was followed by a delicious cream tea provided by the Committee, served on floral cake-stands and with posies on the tables. So despite the lack of a garden, we were surrounded by flowers! Ann Sharp thanked Shelagh Willis and the team for organising it all.
