Congratulations to Simon Shorrick, the event co-ordinator for the eighth annual Big Health Check and Social Care Open Day which took place in Gloucester on 25 May. It also marked the launch of the Special Olympics Gloucestershire. The event was aimed at helping people with learning disabilities to stay healthy and active.

One thousand and twenty-one participants, volunteers and support staff had the opportunity to find out more about local services from the 78 stall holders, who were representing statutory, voluntary, tertiary and private organisations.

One hundred and twenty eight people with a learning disability signed up so far for the Special Olympics programme. Said Simon: “It’s always a great occasion and a brilliant opportunity to bring people with learning disabilities and their carers together to ?nd out more about local services, share their views, wonderful example of inclusion, connectivity and engagement to enable well-being with our most vulnerable of people and, most of all, enjoy themselves.”

And a thought to end with from Her Majesty, the Queen: “It has always been easy to hate and destroy. To build and to cherish is much more difficult.”

Have a good week!
