DISTURBING OR COMFORTING?

Last Sunday, many churches observed the feast of Pentecost, a celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit of God.

We speak of the Spirit in various ways: as descending upon us or blowing through our lives; and also as dwelling within us and giving us life. Sometimes we are aware of the Spirit coming (or welling up) as peacefully as an alighting dove, or even as gently as a breath, bringing calm and reassurance. But at other times it seems as dramatic as wind and fire, bringing inspiration or even disturbance and disruption.

There are days when we need to be inspired or comforted, and days when we need to be disturbed and shaken out of our complacency, our self-centredness, or even the unjust ways of our society. But, however we are moved, we need not be afraid; the One who can inspire us to new heights or lead us into the storm of challenge and change does not desert us but is compassionate and holds on, keeping us secure in the love from which we cannot be separated.
