OUR Winter programme of Speakers has now finished with a talk by Miriam Harvey on “Tudor Worcester”, and we are now beginning our Summer programme of Outings. Our first coach outing this year was on Tuesday, April 19 when 33 members enjoyed a day at Quarry Bank Mill, a NT property in Cheshire. We had plenty of time to wander round the beautiful gardens and a very interesting look around the Mill itself, and learnt of the living and working conditions of the Mill workers. In particular we had a guided tour of the Apprentice House where we saw how the children, from 9 years to 18 years, had to live and work. Life was certainly harsh for these children, although conditions at Quarry Bank Mill were far better than others, and the owners – The Gregg family - provided housing for their workers and were considered to be good employers, although working hours were long and conditions were not good. We all enjoyed warm, sunny weather and an interesting and informative day out. Currently some of our members are enjoying a holiday in Scotland, and our next Outing will be to Corsham Court on May 4.
