THERE was a notable recognition of dedicated support for the Royal British Legion, when Alan Fish was presented with a TV set at the luncheon following Sunday's Remembrance Day Service. Each November for more than 20 years, in fair weather and foul, Alan, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, has been selling poppies round West Malvern. Largely thanks to his efforts, the village has always made exceptional contributions to the Poppy Appeal – this year we topped £7,000. For many years Alan has also played a central role as the immaculate and impressive standard bearer at the St James's Church Remembrance Service - this year conducted by the all-woman team of Deacon Revd Rosemary Herbert and Curate Revd Emma Goldby who preached a topical sermon.

Another principal contributor was John Rainen who was in fine form at the organ, which is soon to be upgraded following a year of successful fundraising. Sunday marked the end of a hectic few days for him, as he had attended a three-day conference in Copenhagen - and another event in Poland - during the week, driving himself home from Luton airport in time for the service. And afterwards, in his role as a district councillor, he hurried off to take part in the memorial ceremony at the Library in Great Malvern!
