BROMYARD Downs Common has a rich historical background from Drovers routes to Second World War Mercian Maquis bunkers, racecourses to rifle butts.

Herefordshire Archaeology are carrying out a series of investigations in to the sporting heritage of the Bromyard Downs to find out more.

On Monday, August 17 an introductory, guided walk will take place between 10am and midday. A survey and examination of the rifle butts will follow on Tuesday, August 18 and Wednesday, August 19. People are invited to come along to help record and recover evidence of the use of the rifle range.

To book on, and for further details about these events, please contact Tim Hoverd via email thoverd@herefordshire.gov.uk or by telephone 01432 383352.

These free events are an example of the great work being carried out as part of the Bromyard Downs Common Project, a Heritage Lottery Fund partnership project between Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and Bromyard Downs Common Association. The project looks after the variety of plants and animals and historical features on the Downs by using traditional ways of working the land with the help of local people. Events, walks, volunteering opportunities and training will be running throughout the year, go to www.bromyarddowns.co.uk or www.herefordshire.org for more ways to get involved.
