WEST MALVERN

TOMORROW Saturday will see the unique all-day Drop-In Musical Marathon at St James's Church, to raise funds for much-needed repairs to the organ. From 10am-10pm, artists both local and from further afield will perform a wide range of music.in one- and half-hour slots. They include everything from our own organist (and event organiser) John Raine through other instrumentalists, groups, choirs and vocalists to suit all tastes. Full timed details are on village notice boards and in the May Hills Echo. Admission £5 per hour, or £15 for a ticket to drop in at any time through the day to hear your favourite item. And the value of each of these contributions to the organ fund will be doubled thanks to the match funding offered by the Friends of St James's.

The next event in the fundraising programme will be an auction of gifts and promises on Friday June 19th. Offers of items and services of all kinds for auction are still invited for this occasion. If you have anything to contribute, please contact John Raine on 01684 565052 or email him at j.w.raine@bham.ac.uk.

Congratulations to John also on topping the West ward poll at last week's District Council elections – a tribute to his hard work on behalf of local people over many years, and acknowledgement of the practical help he has given many individuals. West Malvern's interests will be well looked after on the new Council. Former councillor Jennie Kelly did best of those not elected. Also worthy of mention is the success of Sarah Rouse, West Malvern born and reared, and a member of our Parish Council. Standing as an independent in Alfrick and Leigh, she led the poll, defeating among others the leader of the previous Council. Also elected to the District Council, in the Dyson Perrins ward, was yet another West Malvern native Chris Reed, well known in the ward for his social work in the new Malvern Vale development.

On Tuesday (May 19) at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, the Garden & Nature Club will hold its last night meeting until the start of the new season in September Guest speaker will be Nigel Hand, who will be talk about Reptiles and Amphibians of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Nigel has filmed for TV and been on radio and is an active committee member of the Herefordshire Amphibian and Reptile Team. His previous visit to the club was particularly popular with youngster because of three live snakes he brought with him. Non-members welcome, £3 on the door.
