MEMBERS who attended the February meeting listened to a talk given by local member, Alan Tyler, on Squadron Leader John Arnsby. Born in Ilford, Essex during the First World War, he attended Chigwell School before working in the legal department of an insurance company.

In 1940 he joined the RAF and trained as a night fighter pilot serving with Beaufighter squadrons in the UK, North Africa and Italy. During which

time he was credited with the destruction of a number of enemy aircraft.

Returning to the UK, he flew Mosquitos until he was killed following a mid-air collision over his home airfield in Cambridgeshire.

Though not a direct relative, Alan’s talk showed how much information can be found and what a comprehensive picture could be built up from available records.

The March meeting will listen to a talk given by local members, Catherine Banks, Faith Renger and Barbara Hartley-Woolley on Barnard’s Green. The talk is the second in the series and is an opportunity for members to hear of the progress in their research.
