At the time of the Second World War there were no Lions clubs in this country but it was as a result of the war that the first Lions club in this country was formed.

The International Association Of Lions Clubs or as it is known today, Lions Intentional was founded in America in 1917. When members of Lions clubs in both Canada and America came to this country to help with the war efforts they saw the suffering and devastation caused by the war. As a result they arranged for aid to be sent to this country from the other members of their clubs back home. The aid was dealt with by the Waifs and Strays Society who's patron was Queen Elizabeth the Queen's Mother. She took a very active part in the distribution of the aid.

Following the war the Queen's Mother sent her Equerry Lord Leconfield to thank the members of the Lions Clubs in Canada and America that had provided the aid. He also visited the Lions headquarters in Oak Brook. He was so impressed with what he saw that soon after his return a group of professional people got together and formed the first club in this country in London in April 1950.

Today the Lions organisation is the largest of it's kind in the world with just short 1.4 million members in clubs in over 200 countries around the world, some still involved in providing humanitarian aid to those suffering as a result of war.
