ST Gregory's was the venue for a poignant First World War Commemoration evening last Friday.

Churchwarden Mark Lister and his wife Beth had researched the lives of the 12 Castlemorton soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice 100 years ago, and their biographies were read in a programme of readings and music to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. These personal accounts really helped everyone to understand the significance of the huge losses sustained. The Hills Singers, directed by Carol Green, gave a moving performance of Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré and drew the event to a close with The Lord bless you and keep you by Rutter.

They led community singing of wartime songs after the interval, during which a delicious beef stew and cake was served to give a flavour of the cuisine of the era. Readings were wonderfully varied and delivered by the local poetry group, The Common Poets. The evening ended with The Last Post, played most ably by John Frith. An appreciative audience donated to the retiring collection and that, together with the church collection on Remembrance Sunday, raised over £400 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Looking ahead, the Ledbury Community Brass Band is giving a concert of festive music on Thursday, December 4 at 7.30pm, again in St Gregory's Church. This annual event has become increasingly popular, so do book your tickets in advance (£10, £5 concessions) from Kevin Jeffery 01531 635310. Bernadette Kearney and Bredon School Choir will be joining the band to provide seasonal entertainment and all proceeds from this event will support Help the Heroes this year.

St Gregory's annual Christmas Coffee Morning is to be combined this year with CaCoffany Christmas Special on Saturday, December 6. This will be held in the church, starting with singing favourite carols from 10am to 10.45am with the opportunity to enjoy coffee, stalls and chat from 10.45am to noon. Do come at any time between 10am and noon and join the festivities. Admission free.
