THE meeting on Monday, November 3 at the Abbey Hotel was opened by our Chairman Bill Major, who warmly welcomed all members, noting the excellent attendance.

We began with a number of humorous stories and this was followed by congratulations from the chair to members with recent birthdays. Business matters were speedily dealt with and our guest speaker, Alistair Patrick was then introduced.

With a long and successful career in the motor industry Alistair’s talk on The History of the Motor Car gave everyone present fascinating insights into aspects of the industry that did not immediately spring to mind.

He focussed upon developments from the 1960’s, the point at which the motor car realistically became available to the general public. We learned how vehicle safety had been a key driver of development. Hitting a tree in 1960 at 30mph would have a 95% fatality rate but in 2010, 95% would hopefully walk away!

Old cars are not as safe as modern ones and it is clearly technology that now drives development. The use of computers for crash simulation, the way in which car bodies are designed to crumple and lose energy have resulted in significant falls in fatalities in the UK, even though we now have six cars for every 10 persons in this country. We were given some eye-raising details on the pricing of cars, where to drive -or not to drive - in the world for the cheapest fuel and for safety on the roads!

Motor cars are dear to the hearts of most men and Don Wood spoke for everyone present in thanking Patrick for what had been a most stimulating and interesting talk.

Our next speaker on Monday, November 17 will be Judy Foulsham presenting The Watercolour Challenge. Why not come along and join us? For information please e-mail t.batesworc@btinternet.com
