REMEMBRANCE Day will have more than usual significance this year, marking as it does the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the final return of British forces from Afghanistan.

As always, the occasion will be well marked in West Malvern, thanks in particular to the efforts of its Royal British Legion branch. The annual Service of Remembrance will be held at St James's Church at 10.30am on Sunday week, November 9, with the traditional observation of two minutes' silence at 11am in memory of those who died. Light refreshments will be on offer in the church after the service

At about 12.30pm, at the Legion Club in Lower Road, there will be a three-course lunch with entertainment suitable for the occasion from the Trench Choir, singing songs from the first world war.

A message from Richard Hammond on behalf of the Legion, for which he works so hard, reads “All are welcome to join us at either part of this special day to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. There is no charge for the meal, just come along and remember those that gave so much, so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today but probably take for granted.”

And tomorrow, Saturday, from 8.30pm the Legion will be holding another of their Fun Nights, with skittles, bingo and free food at the club in Lower Road. Non-members will be more than welcome to go along and join the fun .

While writing these notes, I was greeted by a startling sight from my office window, which overlooks the St James's House arboretum. A hard-hatted tree surgeon, some 40-50 feet above the ground, was carrying out some maintenance work on one of the fine cedars. Our Elim neighbours deserve credit for their management and restoration of these lovely grounds, created more than a century ago by Lady Howard De Walden.
