E is for Elephant was the title of the presentation given at October's meeting of Malvern Women's Guild of Friendship at Christ Church Hall, Avenue Road, Malvern.

It was obvious that the speaker Phred Newbury has great affection for elephants as they have huge intelligence, long memories and care about one another.

Sadly on average one elephant is killed by poachers approximately every 15 minutes and if they are to survive in the wild they need our help. Otherwise we will only be able to see them in captivity, on film - or in children's alphabet picture books!

All the funds raised by Mrs Newbury with her talks go to the Mount Elgon Elephant Monitoring project via The Born Free Foundation. Mount Elgon is in Western Kenya on the border with Uganda and the money pays for equipment and rangers who protect Mount Elgon elephants from further poaching. It also gives these brave men pride as they are held in high regard in their community - the basis of showing local people that elephants are worth more alive than dead. It is hoped this area will become a tourist destination, which will give even more protection to the elephants and help the human population by bringing money into the area.

The meeting was chaired by Jenny Bull who also gave the vote of thanks.

Future events include an Annual Lunch in November, Christmas entertainment by The Malvern Singers in December and the Annual General Meeting in January.
