MORNING service at St James’s Church on Sunday will feature a very topical questioning look at commemorations of war in words and music.

Entitled Forgive Our Foolish Ways it will be presented by two of the West Malvern community’s most creative people, Gwyn Klee and organist John Raine. On the theme of hymns that tell a story, it will be based on the cherished Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

Local residents will be sorry to learn that Sam and Sue Dakin’s brave attempt to keep going the plumbing and heating business established by the late Andy has had to come to an end due to Sam’s unlucky health problems. Many in the village will have benefited from the prompt and cheerful Dakin service over the years and will wish the family well for the future.

Coincidentally another Dakin, Rosie, who runs the Willows Pre-School group, is behind a a charity music night to be held at the Social Club from 8pm tomorrow week, Saturday, October 11. Rosie has been volunteering in an orphanage in Cameroon, which is badly in need of funds. Hence this event. which will feature West Malvern’s own Dirty Harry Band, with proceeds from the £5 admission charge going to the orphanage.

Also at the Social Club tonight at 8pm is The Big Village Quiz with Lots of fun and prizes. £2 per player.

Members of the community are invited to join the pupils of St James’s Primary School in their project to mark the centenary of the First World War, which will take the form of a Remembrance Rug. This ragwork rug will be made up of contributed pieces of material, perhaps to remember a loved one or commemorate an event or the sacrifices many by so many – not least former pupils of the school whose names are recorded on the war memorial just across the road in St James’s churchyard. Just call in to the school to add your piece.

One of the school’s longest serving staff, Secretary Gay Griffiths recently resigned after 14 years of faithful service to set up her own painting and decorating business. Two posts, which may well interest local residents, will shortly be advertised.
