AUGUST, being a holiday month for many WIs, there was very little business; so following the distribution of birthday cards and reports on the several events that members had attended during the previous month they were ready for Pamela Llewelyn to talk about her work as a community nurse in Uganda with VSO.

It seemed a very brave move to take at retirement age. However, she was able to take a lifetime of nursing experience into a very different world from that of the NHS.

Based at Masindi Community Hospital, with very few medical essentials, amid great poverty and lack of transport, her responsibilities included dealing with everything from malaria, drinking water issues, reproductive health in its widest context and even leprosy.

Pamela told members of her triumphs, one of which was treating a bedsore with honey, and sometimes her failures among such friendly people.

It was an extremely interesting talk, which afterwards generated a lot of questions from the floor.

Elisabeth Dempsey thanked Mrs Llewelyn very sincerely on behalf of all those present.

The competition for something blue was won by Sue Strang, Ann Hewitt and Elisabeth.

On Tuesday,September 9 at 7.30pm in the village hall Ann Gopsill will talk about collectables and stories from the Second World War. Visitors are always welcome.
