A MEETING of the Hot Peppers WI was held on July 23 when Cathy Bester opened by welcoming members and friends.

It was lovely to see Sue White back after her prolonged illness, although not with her full vigour.

Cathy began by relating the outstanding success of the recent fund-raising events. Many thanks were conveyed to those who had provided cakes and time in manning the stalls.

The Jazz festival, although wet on Saturday, proved very beneficial as the warm-up event.

Next was the day of the Upton in Bloom judging when members had a table in the Old Church yard. Brilliant sunshine prevailed and many people donated money in return of cakes both devoured and taken home, in support of the Upton in Bloom funds.

The next event was the Blues Festival situated on the Sports field. It was the inauguration of the marquee. Pouring rain and a new task! Nevertheless, with the assistance of volunteering men, members erected what was to prove to be a very justified investment. Tables, chairs, urns, delicious cakes and decorations were positioned and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.

Sunday was to follow, with yet more cakes and merriment and brilliant sunshine. A complete sell-out and a fantastic weekend.

Cathy then introduced Pat King who is Chairman of the Upton Garden club. Pat suggested that members might like to enter the forthcoming Vegetable and Craft show on September 6 and distributed schedules.

It was suggested that members might like to compile an album for the Upton museum in commemoration of the Centenary of the WI. Names were taken for the boat trip on September 10 for the Baton relay. In the time remaining, there were several members exhibiting various handicrafts, from which other members gained tips and ideas. Tea and cakes were devoured after a very informative evening.

The next meeting is a Garden Party on Wednesday, August 27, to celebrate the very enjoyable and successful first year as members of the WI Federation. Please go to the website or phone 01684 594610 for details.

Don't forget to visit the marquee on Fish Meadow for the Sunshine Festival over the Bank Holiday.
