A FORMER Benedictine monastery now transformed into a country house is holding an open day next month.

Last year the Worcester News reported on Hand Picked Hotels exchanging contracts with previous owner Clarenco on the sale of Stanbrook Abbey Hotel, in Callow End, near Worcester.

The gothic style abbey was built in 1625 and once inhabited by Benedictine nuns, and is set in a walled estate of 26 acres. The grounds have the original chapel, the Callow Great Hall and an impressive 100ft Bell Tower which offers far reaching views of the Worcestershire countryside and across to the River Severn.

The Grade II listed Stanbrook Abbey hotel has 55 individually styled bedrooms including eight feature rooms and suites.

Hand Picked Hotels added the venue to its 20-strong portfolio of country house hotels across the country last year.

Gareth Davies, general manager of Stanbrook Abbey, said: “The hotel has a fascinating past which remains very visible throughout the building, yet the thoughtful design blends modern touches and contemporary features to make our guests feel at home.

"After a successful year fully integrating Stanbrook Abbey into the Hand Picked family and establishing it as a key leisure hotel within the group, we are pleased to have welcomed so many guests over the last 12 months - intrigued by our unique history and heritage - and look forward to welcoming many more visitors to our region.”

The hotel's family friendly open day takes place on Sunday, July 1, being held between noon and 4pm.

The event features entertainment and attractions include face painting, a children’s craft competition, an ice cream stall, a live DJ, Abbey Tours, a Morgan Car Company showcase, cider tasting and a raffle.
