THERE'S better news for Gtech, the innovative Worcester company embroiled in a row with residents over its plans to build new headquarters near Warndon Villages, because it has received a Queen's Award for Enterprise, the UK’s highest accolade for business success.

The cordless cleaner and power tool specialist, which is currently based at Spetchley, has seen its profits rocket from £27,000 to £6.5m in just three years and the award recognises the strong growth enjoyed since 2012, when Gtech launched its high performance, lightweight and cordless vacuum cleaner AirRam. Company turnover this year is expected to be £70m.

“We feel very honoured to receive a Queen’s Award,” said Gtech’s founder and chief executive Nick Grey. “Our design and engineering team set out to change the way people vacuum their homes for ever when we designed the Gtech AirRam and this is a fantastic reward for that effort.

“Gtech has grown from 20 to 65 employees in the last two years and the support they give the management team and I is second to none. Their dedication in designing high performance, cordless products and providing outstanding customer service makes me very proud. We will enjoy this moment and continue to work hard to honour the award for both our company and customers.”

Gtech has received the Queen's Award in the innovation category following overseas sales growth of more than 53 per cent in the last three years.

The Gtech AirRam was developed by Mr Grey and his engineering team who worked through the fundamental challenges of cleaning a modern home. Their original approach took two years and a £1m investment in research and development to create the cordless freedom, unique design and patented technology that has proved so successful.

Also named in the Queen's Awards is Floortex, the manufacturer of chair mats and other surface protection products, which is headquartered in Tewkesbury and exports to 30 companies worldwide. Steve Bull, chief executive and company owner, said: “As a UK company being selected for a Queens Award for Enterprise is one of the greatest honours achievable. We are all so proud and excited to gain this recognition and it’s testament to the huge effort put in by the whole team since we started in 2002. An award of this stature will only spur us on even more to further consolidate our position as the global leader in chair mat and surface protection innovation as we continue to develop our global presence.”
