A MAN who smashed a window worth £2,289 on a drunken night out has been jailed.

Warren Willis, of Pickersleigh Road, Malvern, pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal damage, thereby breaching a 10-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, handed to him in November last year for a similar offence.

Sam Dixon, prosecuting at Worcester Magistrates Court, said door staff at a pub in Worcester Road, Malvern, saw the defendent with two other males at 7pm on March 23 in an “intoxicated” state.

Willis approached them and asked if there was any work on the door. When they told him there was not, the 35-year-old left and crossed the road.

He was then seen striking a 10ft by 12ft window of Young and Co with his forearm before throwing a traffic cone at it, causing it to smash.

Edward Gaynor-Smith, defending, said his client had been complying with a supervision order placed on him by the court but had been sent home from appointments on a least four occasions because his case worker at the Probation Service was not available.

He said on the day of the offence, Willis was feeling “down in the dumps” and his friends had “foolishly” attempted to cheer him up by buying him alcohol.

He added his client wanted help to address his issues with alcohol and had been struggling with the breakdown of a relationship.

He said: “He doesn’t want to be before the courts, he wants to change his ways.”

However, magistrates said they could find “no reason” not to activate Willis’ suspended sentence and sent him to prison for eight weeks for the breach.

He was given another eight weeks, to run concurrently, for the criminal damage and will serve half the sentence in custody.
