TORCHBEARER PROFILE: RICHARD BROWN

OVER the past three and a half years, the Joanna Brown Trust has raised more than £100,000 to help youngsters in Worcestershire, across the UK and abroad find a way into and excel at sport.

It was set up in memory of former Dyson Perrins High School student Joanna Brown, who grew up in Malvern and was a talented sportswoman, excelling in sports such as netball and rowing.

The 31-year-old died in a fall after visiting China to watch the Beijing Olympics, and although her family were devastated they wanted to do something positive in her memory.

Now her brother, Richard Brown, above, who founded and runs the charity, will have the honour of completing a leg of the Olympic Torch relay route as it passes through their home town on Friday, May 25.

Mr Brown, who lives in Warndon Villages, Worcester, and was nominated by his wife Katie, said it would be a poignant moment.

“To have been selected to be a torchbearer for the Olympic Flame is amazing,”

said the 31-year-old, who works at the University of Worcester.

“Just to have been nominated was very humbling, so to have actually been selected is overwhelming. Having set up the Joanna Brown Trust in memory of my sister it is a wonderful thing to be doing in celebration of what we have achieved in Jo’s name.

“Jo died in an accident while travelling back from the last Olympics in Beijing, where she’d been to watch the games, so to be a torchbearer for London 2012 is very special.

“I’ll certainly be carrying the torch for Jo on Friday, May 25.

“The fact I have the opportunity to carry the torch in my home town of Malvern makes it even more special.”
