Sainsbury's application turned down

Supermarket application turned down Supermarket application turned down

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's plan for a new store in Ledbury has been rejected by Herefordshire councillors.

At this morning's meeting of the council's planning committee, members voted 12-6 to back the officers’ recommendation to throw the plan out.

Sainsbury’s had applied for permission to build the store off Leadon Way, on land currently occupied by the Galebreakers factory.

The application has proved divisive in Ledbury, with organised groups both supporting and opposing it.

Good job! After seeing so many of our old downtown areas in California devastated by the influx of over-sized box stores, I'm happy that you have made this decision for your darling town. Keep up the good work and I hope to visit soon.

Well done to old the people tght have retired to deadbury you finally got your wish and will be keeping it dead for the time being. All the people that have grown up in Ledbury or lived here for generations surely know what is better for this town rather than people who have been here a few years.

How is this either justice, or poetic? Whilst respecting the fact that you must be delighted, I hardly think that poetic justice is appropriate. I sat in a planning meeting, it was not a court of law. I did not see either a judge or a magistrate. In future, whilst gloating, I would suggest a simple 'RESULT!!', or 'GET IN', as that would express your feelings quite adequately, and possibly less inflammatory.
Kind regards.
Mark.

Most of the words that Mark says are true, there is not point having a dig at others which ever side of the fence you are on, it will be upsetting for some people, comments on ageism are not nessecary either, you could be from Ledbury move away and come back to retire there

I was at the meeting. We (LOTS) were not gloating and LESS were gracious in defeat. It's time to move on.

For anyone who loves this town, and most people on both sides clearly do, there are many more issues than whether or not it has a superstore on the edge. Some of them have been mentioned on this thread.

We as citizens of Ledbury, all of us, can be part of that. We are just starting work on a new Town Plan and possibly also a Neighbourhood Plan - I'll spare you the hundreds of words explaining the difference - that will help shape the future of Ledbury. Get involved - and let's stop wasting energy sniping at each other online.

The supermarket issue, though a large one, is not the only thing that Ledbury needs to look at. There is a distinct lack of facilities for the younger generation here, which, it seems, will only get worse with the youth centre and swimming pool under threat, for a town whose youth are moving away faster than they come here, it is an item that I personally feel should be very near the top of any angenda.
As a staunch supporter of the Sainsbury's application I'd also like to add that this may not be the end, I'm sure Sainsbury's are looking at the appeal process and hope that they decide to go for it.

(offensive comment snipped) All the people that have grown up in Ledbury or lived here for generations surely know what is better for this town rather than people who have been here a few years.

While there is something to be said for that, there is also truth in the contrary view; i.e. that people who have moved in to Ledbury having lived in other locations have valuable experience that can be beneficial to the development of the town. Those are the people who will have seen, first hand, the damage that can be caused by inappropriate development and, conversely, seen the benefits that can be achieved through appropriate development of small towns.

This "us and them" attitude is not an appropriate way to work towards the development of the town. If you want to be involved in shaping the town's future then you should be looking to contribute to the plans that Andrew Warmington has mentioned.

To the LOTS that want less, and the LESS that want more (development), this is not the last gigantic store that will try to build in your town. They are very determined and will eventually win, especially in a down economy when people get desperate. Create a master plan and stick to it so you don't have to argue with each other as much.

To jmccabe,
The biggest problem that needs to be addressed is the patronising attitudes that the incoming people bring with them, I too have lived in several larger towns and cities, but I do not see this as any great source of wisdom.

I was quite dismayed to hear the result that Sainsbury's had been turned down, maybe not so surprised although I believe this was a huge blow to the 1000's of residents in and around Ledbury that clearly were very much in favour of the new store. I think it is great that our international and Uk out of County friends above have taken such an active interest in the future of Ledbury, this makes us feel very special indeed thank you, as to the gloating, it's not an attractive trait to have at all, he who laughs last and all that!
On a serious note though, I do hope that Sainsbury's noted the thousands of local Ledbury people that are very much in support of this development and that they come back fighting and appeal this decision quick smart.
Ledbury people will not give up, no way, it is time to make a stand and this last few weeks has seen the support for this store go absolutely go crazy, and now it has been voted against, this has made the people of Ledbury even more determined to stop the life being suffocated in Ledbury, we want the town to survive & develop in order to move into the future, for all our sakes.
Thanks to all who supported Ledbury and the LESS group, your support has been amazing!
LOTS you may have won this battle, we accept that you to feel proud but win the war, hmm, we shall see!
