Litter pickers are far from rubbish

COUNCIL litter pickers have been praised for their efficient response to reports of roadside rubbish.

Parish councillors from Ripple, near Upton-upon-Severn, contacted Malvern Hills District Council with concerns over the amount of litter along the main A4104 and A38 roads.

Parish clerk Lorna Gower said they were delighted when MHDC staff turned up without delay and spent three days collecting more than 40 bin liners of rubbish.

Coun Bronwen Behan, responsible for environmental control at MHDC, said: “We are extremely pleased to hear that our litter picking work is appreciated and grateful to Ripple Parish Council for taking the time to praise the recent litter clearance undertaken within the area.

“Our litter picking team works hard, come rain or shine, all year round to keep the district clean and safe and I know that they will be very encouraged by the fact that their efforts are noticed by our resident."

I am a litttle confused here. The council let the litter on the roads get so bad that councillors had to ring up and complain about it and somehow the council are proud of this .... I would have thought that they should only be proud if no one had to ring up and complain as they were already doing doing their jobs and keeping the malverns litter free!!

I totally agree with sarah and her chickens.
The street and main roads of malvern are very often a disgrace, with all of the man power and machinery that they have it should be spotless at all times not only after someone has complained.

Why do people complain about the Council when litter becomes a problem?
I feel sure, that the offending litter has been dropped by some resident, visitor, or could not care less individual who is to idle to place their discarded food wrapper, drinks can or cartons, chewing gum and let us not forget those drivers who just throw rubbish out of their vehicle windows.
I believe that the Councils environmental team do a fantastic job in cleaning up after some of our inconsiderate litter bugs who have no pride in their own homes or surroundings. Come you litterbugs find a “BIN to Put It IN “. Please do not use some silly excuse to admonish your guilt just bin it.

While your comments may have some merit. I feel that you should place the ultimate blame on those who actually cause the litter. I have sat by the river in Upton on seven, and traversed from the river up High street along Old Street, to the Car park. During my trek, I have seen litter just dropped willy-nilly. However, if you challenge the person responsible. Either you get a mouthful of abuse, or we pay our Council Tax.

I agree totally that those to blame are the people who dropped it.But I do not drop litter and I pay my council tax so I expect the litter to be picked up by those we pay to do it,and preferably before it gets to the point where I have to complain about it.I do not expect the council to try and get a bit of good publicity by pointing out they are doing what they are paid to do.

Sarah, Again your comments are well founded, and you must also remember that very old proverb “Self-praise is NO praise at all”

Sarah, your politeness of replies says that you are a person of some substance, and might fair very well as a Councillor. Have you ever thought about becoming a representative of the people? You certainly have a very clear attitude of how Councils should perform without self-gratification. Alternatively, are you to faithful to your chickens to consider being a Town or County Councillor?

That is certainly something to consider, and I could always take my chickens with me.Thank you for the compliment !

Perhaps someone should find out what the souce of this litter is and some high profile prosecutions should brought?

The Litter Pickers do a good job - not just picking litter but noticing other issues requiring action at the same time.

BadgerMash.
It is well know who creates the litter. It is those uncaring individuals who consider themselves above the law, and if challenged would no doubt retort with some unpalatable comment in language of Anglo Saxon origin. This is now becoming the everyday language of many adults and their offspring’s.

Many years ago, we had notices on buses that reminded people that spitting was prohibited. We also had used ticket collection bins on the omnibus. Spitting seems to have returned along with a once eradicated disease (tuberculosis) which is now on its return. No doubt, and I other contributors would heartily agree. Some stiff punishment for those who cause much of our unnecessary litter would be welcome. Teachers and parents disciplined most of the older indigenous populace; many of our young people are very well behaved and respect our environment. However, a minority consider themselves above our hygiene standards and will always discard their litter as soon as they have no requirement for it...
