Census e-mail scam

RESIDENTS are being warned not to fall foul of an online scam.

An e-mail posing to be from a National Statistician called Jil Matheson is being circulated in the area, demanding individuals provide further personal information for last year’s census and threatens fines for non-compliance.

It is called ‘Population Census: a message to everyone - act now’.

Glen Watson, 2011 census director for the Office for National Statistics, said: “This email is a scam and a hoax. We believe the links in the e-mail could download malware which could put personal data, including financial information, at risk.”

Anyone receiving the e-mail can report it at actionfraud.org.uk.
