JUDGES from RHS Britain in Bloom were full of praise for Upton after both the town and the weather gave them a welcome to remember.

As well as receiving the usual tour of the town yesterday (Tuesday, August 2), starting at the Kings Head and taking in the Riverside Walk among other town attractions, the judges were treated to a special welcome at the Old Churchyard.

Not only did the sun shine for John Woodward and Mel Henley’s visit, but they were also treated to music from local band The Bones, rows of colourful flags and representatives from the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion.

Mr Woodward said: “As a first-time visitor to Upton I can see it’s a charming place. You can see why it is very attractive to people who want to come and enjoy the ambiance by the river. It’s the perfect stopping place.

“The floral enhancements really do make a difference and just top it off. I can certainly say we have had a really interesting time and seen some lovely displays.”

Fellow judge Mel Henley paid tribute to the warm welcome they received throughout the tour.

He said: “I think it just brightens the whole town up. You have a lovely town already, but to adorn it with flowers like this really makes a difference.”

Upton in Bloom chairman Jackie Surtees hopes this year’s entry could improve on their two previous attempts in the competition.

She said: “It seemed to go very well. I’m very pleased with it and the town looks good.

“We have entered twice before and we have got silver gilt both times, so it would be nice to think we can get a gold this time but time will tell.”

Mayor Andrea Morgan was impressed with the judge’s attention to detail and the efforts of the town’s volunteers.

She said: “The flowers have excelled. The amount of work the team has put in is unbelievable. The town owes them a lot of gratitude and I can’t thank them enough.”
