THE people of Welland will be celebrating the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday, April 29, with a street party.

The road outside the village hall will be closed for the party, which is taking place from 2pm-4pm on the day.

Roger Cousins, one of the organisers, said: "It will be a real street party, with tables outside with bright red coverings.

"There will be a bouncy castle and plenty of arts and crafts activities for the children.

"Les Willis of Peppasound will be providing the music, and everyone from the village is welcome."

The organiser will be providing big boxes of chalk in red, white and blue, and young people will be encouraged to create designs on the pavements and kerbstones.

And there will be a decorated hat competition, with five prizes of Royal Worcester plates with pictures of the happy couple.

"We want as many people as possible to get busy decorating hats to make the occasion as festive as possible."

People coming to the party are also being asked to bring a plate of food apiece to eat at around 3pm.

"We'll have a big screen and we'll be showing a rerun of the wedding," said Mr Cousins. "Obviously we'll be hoping for good weather, but it we're unlucky, we'll hold the party inside the village hall and the church."

The event is being made possible by contributions from a number of community groups.

Welland and Little Malvern Parish Council are funding the road closure and the bouncy castle, the village fete committee has contributed £200 for new bunting and Friends of Welland are buying plates, serviettes and some prizes.
