MALVERN’S long-running involvement in cutting edge technology will be celebrated during a special dinner next month.

The event will be taking place at Malvern College on Friday, March 11.

Organiser Emma Philpott, a businesswoman from West Malvern, said: “I wanted to celebrate the fantastic technical achievements that have occurred in the past and highlight the future technical success possible in Malvern with all the expertise we have here.”

She continued: “There is an impressive list of technologies that originated in Malvern, some of the more famous ones including liquid crystal displays (LCDs), radar. thermal imaging, flat panel speakers and millimeter wave scanners.

“The dinner will be to celebrate of all these achievements and to honour the great minds, lateral thinking, risk taking and experimentation which made them possible.”

The event will feature a talk by Peter Raynes, an Oxford University professor who was one of the people that invented LCDs.

Malvern’s MP Harriett Baldwin will speak about support for technology in the area and future plans, and there will be displays of old technical research from the Malvern Historical Society.

The event costs £40 per head, including a pre-dinner drink and a three course meal with wine followed by coffee.

Dr Philpott said: “I am charging the dinner at cost price because I want it to be open to as many local people as possible. Non-technical people are very welcome to attend and will hopefully find the talks just as interesting as the scientists in the audience.”
