NATIONAL Grid say it would not be planning its proposed pressure reduction plant at Corse if it presented a risk to residents.

Residents are beginning to wonder if it only proposed an out of the way place like Corse because of the danger posed.

The more residents find out about the proposed plant the more concerned they are becoming and with every right.

This is not just your typical `not in my backyard' protest. Not only would the proposed plant cover six acres, and possibly produce toxic emissions, but the pipeline carries gas at a pressure level unprecedented in Europe and were there to be an accident, any resulting might be enormous.

Energy supply will be one of the biggest political problems facing this country in the future and the proposed gas pipeline from Milford Haven no doubt has an important role to play.

The same arguments are on the way over new nuclear power stations, no one wants one next to them. We all need energy but residents have a right to be told the truth about what risks they may be asked to pay.

The Government needs to be more far-sighted and look seriously at alternatives like paying for solar panels on every home and we all need to do more ourselves to reduce our energy consumption.

This week's hot weather is no doubt another illustration of the effects of the globe's rampant use of energy resources and a taste of things to come.

It's going to mean changing the way we live and work, air-conditioned home and offices, working earlier, and perhaps in the evenings, with siestas in the afternoons.

Changing climate is our greatest challenge but one which government's still seem afraid to address.
