UPTON in Bloom will be continuing for at least one more year.

The successful group’s future had been in doubt after chairman Jackie Surtees voiced concerns over its ability to continue without more support.

However, at the group’s annual general meeting on Thursday (October 7) committee members decided to carry on for 2011.

Mrs Surtees said a significant factor in the decision was Upton’s invitation to participate in the prestigious national Britain in Bloom competition.

“The national recognition is something that is good for the town and I think it would be a shame for Upton if we didn’t continue for at least another year,” she said. “We’ve been advertising for more people to join us in making our town a better place to live. The response has unfortunately been rather low, but several people have said they would like to help us.”

She continued: “I think that with the help of local authorities and volunteers, and perhaps other organisations in the town who are involved in attracting tourists, we can go forward to 2011 and another successful year for Upton in Bloom.”

All of the Upton in Bloom committee have agreed to return for another year, although two of the group’s founding members, Peter and Diane Bellamy, will be standing down when they leave the area.

Mrs Surtees paid tribute to their efforts, saying: “I would like to thank them both for all their hard work and support to the committee over the years. They will be missed.”

With planning for next year set to start in the coming weeks, Mrs Surtees is still eager to hear from anyone who would like to get involved.
