Narrow defeat for Tesco Express plan

A PLAN that would have seen the building of a Tesco Express convenience store in Pickersleigh Road, Malvern, was narrowly defeated this week.

Developer Hinton Properties Ltd made the application to demolish the Gas Tavern pub on the corner of Madresfield Road and replace it with the shop and three houses.

The developer contended that the pub, currently vacant, was unviable and several recent managers have failed to make a go of it.

At Wednesday's meeting of Malvern Hills District Council's southern area development control committee, ward members Sheila Young and Val Myatt proposed and seconded that the development be allowed.

But Coun Roger Hall-Jones said that the loss of the pub, a community facility, should be opposed. He said: "It's one of the few facilities left in the area with a catchment area of 3-4,000, which is larger that Upton, and Upton supports ten pubs."

Coun John Waring agreed, citing the example of the Morgan as how a formerly unsuccessful pub can be brought back to life.

The initial proposal to approve the plan was defeated and a proposal by Coun Hall-Jones for refusal was approved, after committee chairman Serena Croad used her casting vote.

The councillors obviously never ventured into 'The Langlands' during it's heyday-ie before the smoking ban-when a pint and a fight was the order of the day, steady work for glaziers there I might add. Many attempts have been made to run this pub but have failed. Why not let Tescos open an Express store;convenient and CHEAP products.Unlike at One Stop, which is also owned by T&S stores, where the prices stink, and you may get served once the queue has reached the far end of the shop.Your other choice is the CO-OP.After they changed it from Somerfields,my wife asked why the prices were so ridiculously high, for a supermarket,to which the manager replied that the CO-Op is a "Convenience Store," you couldn't make it up.

This would also be a good location for a KFC.

The pub has never been viable and it would be much better for Tesco to have a shop there. A bit too 21st century for Malvern!!

A community pub....I was born and have lived in the area for 40 years! It has always had a reputation of being a rough pub,it has now sat empty for a long time opening and closing on a regular basis.Give it to a company who will spend money on it and improve the area and create some much needed jobs!

Of course it sounds rustic and idyllic if you refer to it as "a community facility", but isn't a convenience shop also "a community facility?"
Comparing a convenience shop with a fighting rink is like comparing chalk with cheese.

How often did these councillors frequent the Langlands? Personally I never dared.
