Singer Sam bows out

MALVERN Wells singer/songwriter Sam Isaac will play his last ever gig this December after announcing his retirement to pursue other projects.

Sam, who released his debut album Bears on the Hear You Me record label in June, has spent the past three years touring all over the UK including racking up performances on MTV2, Channel 4 and Radio 1.

He will take to the stage at Worcester’s Firefly venue on Saturday, December 5 as part of Sorry About My Gold Clubs - a regular night for live bands started by Sam and his bandmate Burt Hill.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to playing the Firefly. It’s a small, intimate venue and will be a great way to round things off before I try different things musically.

“I played my first solo shows in Worcester. It seems fitting to finish things off there.”

Sam, whose real name is Samuel Roberts, was well known for a DIY aesthetic which saw him play many early shows at the homes of his fans. He explained to online music magazine The 405, that the financial cost of being a struggling indie musician had taken its toll.

He added: “Being ‘Sam Isaac’ has left me in a genuinely horrific and perilous position financially that will take years to recover from. I would never be involved in anything again unless it was absolutely the right thing to do.

“I wanted to put a real end on it, rather than just slowly drifting away. It will be fun to say goodbye to a project I love and have toiled over relentlessly.”

Accompanying Sam for his final gig will be Scottish band the Xcerts, Worcester’s Tall Ships and the Irony, who hail from Evesham.

Tickets for the show are available in advance for £5 from wegottickets.com or £6 on the door. Doors will be open at 7.30pm and entry is limited to over-18s only.
