BARNARDS Green traders are taking advantage of Malvern’s festive ‘Shop Local’ campaign to offer shoppers some extra Christmas entertainment and the chance to win one of 30 goody bags worth £15 a piece.
Malvern Hills District Council is organising the initiative thanks to a grant of £10,000 from the Worcestershire Partnership’s economic task group.
The council is working with businesses in areas such as Barnards Green, providing the money and encouraging them to utilise it in whatever way they feel will be most beneficial over the coming weeks.
The Barnards Green Traders Association has decided to use its share of the money to offer some extra special attractions to shoppers on Saturday December 12 and 19.
As well as providing entertainment on both days they will also be organising a “secret shopper” competition, offering shoppers the chance to win a bag packed full of goodies.
From 10am until 2pm on both Saturdays Father Christmas will be visiting different shops around Barnards Green, selecting lucky shoppers at random to receive a gift bag to the value of £15. In total he will be giving away 30 bags, 15 on each Saturday.
Carol Brooks, of the Toy Corner, feels the Shop Local scheme is very positive for the area.
“Everyone here is very pleased to have it and wants to support it in any way that they can,” she said. “We hope that it will give traders across the area a boost in the run-up to Christmas.”
Jane Knowles, of Just So, is also delighted to be involved in the campaign.
“Shop Local is a big boost and the support is very well-received as I think it has been a tough year for all the independent traders in Malvern,” she said. “It is nice that the council has involved us in the decision-making for the campaign. That has been really refreshing, and we in turn can pass that support on to our customers as a way of saying thank you for shopping locally.”
Mrs Knowles believes Barnards Green has plenty to offer to shoppers over the festive period.
“All traders within Barnards Green would ask Malvern residents to consider shopping locally this Christmas,” she said. “If you enjoy the uniqueness of 'The Green' then please support your local traders, as that is how the businesses will thrive and continue to provide the flavour and vibrant mix of the traditional high street for you.”
