MEMBERS of Malvern Greenpeace and Transition Malvern Hills will be planting apple trees on Saturday (November 21) in support of a national campaign to stop the expansion of Heathrow Airport.
An ‘Orchard of Resistance’ has already been planted on land purchased by Greenpeace in the village of Sipson, which is due to be demolished to make way for a new third runway at the airport.
Now supporters from Malvern are joining with others from across the country by planting their own Cox’s apple trees in support of the campaign.
Representatives from Malvern Greenpeace and Transition Malvern Hills will be meeting up at 2pm tomorrow before marching through the town centre to Malvern Youth Centre, in Albert Road North, where they will be planting two trees at 2.30pm.
Ginny Lee, of Malvern Greenpeace, said: “An expanded Heathrow would become the single biggest source of CO2 in Britain and threaten what chance the UK has of slashing its emissions and playing its part in beating climate change.”
Anyone who would like to support the event is welcome to attend, and coffee and cake will be served after the trees have been planted.
