LOCAL knitters have reached a special landmark after sending their 1,000th teddy bear in less than two years to less fortunate children around the world.
Teddies for Tragedies Worcestershire asks people to knit colourful woollen teddy bears, following a simple design, that are then sent out to children in some of the poorest parts of the world.
Maureen Edwards, of Arosa Drive in Malvern, knitted her first teddy bear just under two years ago after being asked to do so by a friend.
Since then she has knitted countless more, and now acts as a local collection point for the bears.
The bears have gone to children in places such as Africa, Romania and Thailand, and recently Mrs Edwards has also been accepting knitted hats and mittens, which have mainly been going to children in Chernobyl.
Due to the huge response some teddies have also been given to Children in Trauma, which works with children in England who have suffered emotional upheaval.
Mrs Edwards said: “I’d like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has made this possible. I’d also like to thank everyone who has given material, cottons and ribbons for the teddy bags.”
The knitting design is available from teddiesfortragedies.org.uk or by calling Mrs Edwards on 01684 564224.
