Blanket raffled off for poppy fund

A BLANKET made of squares knitted by users of Malvern Library will be raffled off on Sunday (November 8) with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Visitors have been busy with their knitting needles over the past few weeks creating the red squares for the blanket.

Knitting has been a big theme at the Graham Road library recently with various events being held throughout October.

Inspired by National Knitting Week, which ran between October 11 and 18, the 'Big Knit-in', supported by Vicki Walker from the nearby Knitting Parlour shop, brought parents and children together to have some fun clicking needles.

Professional knitter Emma King also dropped by to present a workshop for the more experienced knitter on finishing techniques, often the most daunting part of a knitting project.

The month-long event, which also included a 'knit and natter' session aimed at getting men to learn the skill, culminated with a workshop for young people and their mums, which proved so popular it was oversubscribed. Another family workshop is planned for the near future for those who missed out.

Library manager Delphine Telfer said: "All the events in October were a great success and it was great to see families and friends coming together to enjoy some fun, while at the same time learning a new skill.

"We'd like to thank everyone who helped make it a success and would like to encourage everyone to show their support for our Poppy Appeal project to help remember our heroes."

The raffle tickets will be on sale on Remembrance Sunday, November 8, at The Fold, Bransford, from 11am on. Tickets are £1 for five. The draw will take place at The Fold at 4pm.
