THE ultimate sacrifice of British servicemen will be remembered at wreath-laying ceremonies, parades and church services throughout the area this weekend.
The Remembrance Sunday events and the thousands of poppies being sold and worn are for the dead of not just the two world wars but also for the British soldiers who have died in more recent conflicts such as Bosnia, Iraq and Afganistan.
Each year local branches of the Royal British Legion organise comemorative ceremonies in conjunction with churches and councils. This year the comemmorative events taking place locally include: Malvern: The Malvern branch of the Royal British Legion is organising the remembrance day parade and service on Sunday, November 8. Members of the Legion, police and fire services, British Red Cross, local Sea and Army Cadets, air training corps, councillors, civic dignitaries and other organisations will meet at the War Memorial in front of the library in Graham Road at 2.15pm where a short service and wreath laying ceremony, including the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille, will take place at 2.30pm. At 2.50pm there will be a parade to the Priory with the Boys Brigade Band and the British Legion standard bearers. A remembrance service will take place at the Priory at 3pm. After the service the parade will reform and return to the library forecourt where the town council chairman and Town Clerk will take the salute.
A service of remembrance will also be held at Christ Church, Avenue Road, on Sunday, November 8, at 10.50am. A memorial in Christ Church records the deaths of 76 men from the world wars and there is a memorial book with biographies of the fallen. There are also plaques commemorating the Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry and the Worcestershire Regiment. Worcestershire Regiement veteran Ted Dodsworth said: “It is hoped that any former members of the regiment might attand, along with any members of the public, who would be most welcome.”
Ledbury: A parade organised by the Ledbury branch of the Legion will take place on Sunday, November 8, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the town’s war memorial. Anyone wanting to join the parade should arrive at St Katherines car park, Main Street, Ledbury, at 10.30am. The wreath laying will take place at the war memorial from around 10.45am and a two minute silence will be observed at 11am. This will be followed by a remembrance service at St Michael’s and All Angels Church. Members of the Ledbury Royal British Legion, the Ledbury Women’s Section, the Mayor and town councillors, scouts, cubs and guides and representatives from army, navy and airforce organisations will be among those taking part.
Upton-Upon-Severn: On Remembrance Sunday a parade will leave from the bottom of New Street in Upton on Sunday, November 8. The parade will gather at 10.15am and march to Upton Parish Church for a service at 10.30am. A wreath will be laid at the church. After the service the parade will form up again and there will be a march to the old church yard at the Pepperpot for wreath laying. The parade will include members of the Royal British Legion, ex-servicemen’s organisations, schools, and representatives of the council and other organisations.
These events will be followed on Wedneday, November 11, armistice day, with a further act of remembrance. A short service will be held at 10.50am outside Upton Memorial Hall. Wreaths will be laid at the memorial and the traditional two minute silence observed at 11am.
Bromyard: The Bromyard Remembrance Sunday parade will take place on Sunday, November 8. The parade will muster at the Conquest car park at 2.20pm and proceed to the church at 2.30pm for a remembrance service at 3pm. The address will be given by Tom Calver who has served in Afganistan as Flag Officer in the RAF Auxilliary.
Cradley: The Cradley branch of the Royal British Legion and the Malvern branch of the Royal Engineers Association will parade with standards in Church Lane in Cradley on Sunday, November 8, meeting at 10.40am. They will march to Cradley Church for a remembrance service where they will lay wreaths at the war memorial. Afterwards they will march to the Maclean war memorial and lay wreaths there.
Powick and Callow End: The Royal British Legion will take part in a rememrance service at St Peter’s Church in Powick on Sunday, November 8. They will meet in the car park at the Red Lion at 10.30am and march to the church where they will lay wreaths at the memorial inside the church. The service will start at 10.45am and include a two minute silence at 11am. In the afternoon at 3pm there will be a wreath laying at the Callow End war memorial followed by a remembrance service at St James Church.
Colwall: In Colwall on Remembrance Sunday there will be a special Remembrance service at St James The Great at 10.45am The service will start around the war memorial and then move into the church. There will also be a service of remembrance at the Colwall Free Church at 10.30am.
Newland: On Sunday, November 8, there will be a service of remembrance at St Leonards, Newland, the Chapel of the Beauchamp Community. The service is at 10.45am.
Hanley Swan: There will be a joint Remembrance Sunday service for the churches of Hanley Swan, Hanley Castle and Welland at St Gabriels in Hanley Swan on Sunday, November 8, at 10.50am.
Suckley: There will be a Remembrance Sunday Evensong at Suckley Church on Sunday, November 8, at 6pm.
West Malvern: The West Malvern branch of the Royal British Legion will take part in a Remembrance service at St James Church at 10.30am on Sunday, November 9. The service will include a two minute silence at 11am and there will be a wreath laying at the war memorial in the churchyard. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the church and the West Malvern branch of the Legion is organising a meal and appropriate entertainment at the British Legion Club in Lower Road.
