MALVERN Hills District Council leader Serena Croad says the decision not to proceed with the 'merger' with Worcester City Council has not ruled out co-operative working between councils.
Cllr Croad, speaking this afternoon, said the council's Conservative group had decided not to support the recommendation, at executive committee on Thursday (July 17), to go forward with a business case for the proposal.
She said the council will be better off pursuing collaboration with other councils on a case-by-case basis.
The 'merger' would have involved one staff to provide the services for the two councils. although they would remain distinct political entities.
"We don't wish to go forward with that idea now. It was something we suggested, and after thinking about it, we decided not to go down that road."
Cllr Ralph Madden, the deputy leader, said: "We're not convinced that merging a rural council like Malvern Hills with an urban one like Worcester City is in the best interests of the Malvern Hills taxpayers.
"There was also concern that Worcester City Council has, in its own words 'significant financial problems'.
"Thirdly, it was felt that money was being requested to employ outside professionals to prepare the business plan, and we want to spend £50-60,0000 on that."
