EYEWITNESSES described a pedestrian being flung into the air after being hit during a multi-vehicle crash in the heart of Great Malvern.
Other pedestrians scattered as at least one vehicle, a Rover 820, mounted the pavement as a result of the accident, just before 3pm yesterday (Thursday).
Two parked cars were hit, as were Easytravel, John Goodwin's Estate Agents and the Foley Arms Hotel.
The injured pedestrian, described as being in his late 30s to 40s, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
A spokesman for the ambulance service, speaking shortly after the accident, described the injuries as "serious". Witnesses stated he was conscious and talking immediately after the crash.
Katy Lush, who lives and works at the Unicorn Inn, immediately dialled 999 and waited while the emergency services arrived.
Maija McDougal, from Malvern, also witnessed the man being hit following collisions between vehicles, including a bus.
She said: "The car came across the road and the chap who was on the pavement went the wrong direction and I saw him being hit and being thrown up into the air."
Rachel Williams, who owns Easytravel in Worcester Road, said her employee Sally Turner stepped outside after hearing a loud bang and then had to jump back in the shop as a car came along the pavement towards her.
Mrs Williams added that there was a general feeling of shock following the incident.
"The only thing we can say is thank goodness it was not on a Friday or Saturday afternoon when the town gets really busy," she said. "It is a miracle that only one pedestrian was injured, although that is one too many."
An ambulance crew also attended to a male driver, although he did not need hospital treatment.
Last night, police confirmed that a man had been arrested, although at the time of going to press, no charges had been brought.
