Composting campaign

Green-minded council officers have launched a campaign to encourage locals to protect the environment by making compost.

Bromleys environmental promotions officer, Kay Spurrier, explained how organic waste from kitchens ruins the environment if it ends up in a landfill site.

She said: Waste such as vegetable peelings, egg shells and teabags give off methane which contributes to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

If this material can be dealt with in peoples homes, we can help the environment.

She added: It takes six to 12 months for the waste to break down into compost, which can be used to fertilise the garden.

Lynn Pantling, of Orpington, was delighted when she tried out a composting bin, provided by the council for £15.

She said: I am surprised at how easy it has been to get into the swing of composting. I can see the results already and Im looking forward to seeing the results next year.

Anyone who wants to buy a bin should ring Kay Spurrier on 020 8313 4913.
