Breastfeeding week is marked by mums

EVERY day that a mother breastfeeds makes a positive difference to her baby, according to Baby Latte, Malvern's breastfeeding support group.

Next week is Breastfeeding Awareness Week and the group, which meets on Thursday mornings at Prospect View health centre in Malvern, is celebrating with some special treats for breastfeeding mums.

There will be free neck and shoulder massages from Jayne Blatchford, cakes from Waitrose, coffee as usual and a chance to win a prize in a raffle. There will be the usual support from breastfeeding counsellor Mair Sherliker and health visitor Julia Greer will also be on hand with help and advice. Mums-to-be as well as breastfeeding mums are welcome and the group meets from 11.15am-12.45pm.

Baby Latte co-ordinator Frances Thurlow wants to encourage more mums to give breastfeeding a go and give their babies the healthiest possible start in life.

"Research shows that the benefits of breastfeeding start right from day one, so every day of breastfeeding is a reason to feel proud," she said, adding that nine out of ten women gave up breastfeeding before they wanted to and friends and families, and groups like Baby Latte, could make a difference, giving mums confidence in their ability to breastfeed.

I'm proud to of been breast fed as a baby. Lord knows what sort of drugs my mum was taking at the time , she was bit of a groupie you know! So I never met my dad. I was left a lot of photographs of me and my mum some showing her breast feeding me up to the age of 8yrs old which I remember well she used to say don't bite or there won't be any desert, this was said to be a healthier option to cow milk in the circles we moved in, even the men would have expressed breast milk in their tea or coffee, on one of the photo's it does look like she was smoking pot in some sort of dive of a place somewhere, never did me any harm. Keep up the great work girls. Helen B

I am very serious! What are you talking about chocolate starfish? You're probably the victim of being a formula fed baby. Some of my friends are still breast feeding their children and they are six years old! It's the best. Helen B
