Talented teenage writers were recognised in the Malvern Young Writer of the Year Award 2008.
Students, their families and teachers attended an award ceremony held at St Edmund's Hall, Malvern College, last week and prizes for poetry and prose were awarded to entrants in different age groups.
The overall competition winner in the 16-19 section was Georgina Price, 16, for her poem Innocence Lost and the winner of the 13-15 section was William Law, 13, for his short story The Invasion.
The competition to celebrate the creative talents of local teenagers has been running for more than a decade and is organised by the Malvern Writers Circle , which was founded by former Malvern Gazette editor Joyce King in 1948.
The competition judges Graham Gardner and Dr David Arnold faced a tough challenge and complemented all the writers for their efforts, imagination and enthusiasm before presenting certificates and cash prizes to the winners. They also thanked teachers at local schools whose commitment was evident from the quality of the work submitted.
Chairman of the Malvern Writers Circle Rob Hemming described the "youthful energy" of the entrants as "inspiring" and all the entries received written feedback from the judges and Malvern Writers Circle. The winners will also see their work in print in the Malvern Writers Circle Diamond Jubilee Anthology, to be published in June.
The prizes were sponsored by playwright Tony Grounds, son of the competition's founder Don Grounds, Martel Scientific Software Consultancy, The Malvern Lions Club and the Malvern Rotary Club.
