MONDAY evening was bleak and cold but over one hundred onlookers gathered to see the switch-on of Rotary's Tree of Light.
Proceedings opened with the Chase Brass Band conducted by Gavin Arnett playing Christmas tunes.
Rotary President, Martin Burton, welcomed everyone and was pleased to recognise the Tree provided a helpful symbol for those commemorating the lives of loved ones, whilst through their sponsorship of lights gave support to others less fortunate.
He was keen to stress the considerable support given to this Rotary project by the Malvern Gazette and also Malvern Hills District Council and many commercial organisations.
Following the dedication of the Tree by Rotarian Canon Basil Trevor Morgan, the chairman of the Malvern Hills District Council, councillor Susan Gill, commended the work of the charities and presented interim payments of £3600 to each of Acorns Children's Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.
She then pressed the switch and after a moment's delay the Tree burst into light.
