BRITAIN’S proud seafaring tradition has been honoured by Malvern Hills District Council.

On Monday, Cllr Andrea Morgan, chairman of the council, raised the Red Ensign flag above the Council House to mark Merchant Navy Day. A short message of thanks from HRH The Earl of Wessex was also read out during the ceremony.

The Red Ensign is the recognised flag of the British Merchant Navy and since 2000  it has been flown by councils and organisations across the country on September 3 in tribute to the 14,661 merchant seafarers who gave their lives during both World Wars.

It also recognises the country’s continuing reliance on the Merchant Navy as it remains responsible for 95 per cent of the UK’s imports, including half the food we eat.

The day is organised by Seafarers UK, the charity that supports the maritime community and falls on the anniversary of the sinking of SS Athenia during the Second World War, which resulted in the loss of 128 passengers and crew.

Cllr Andrea Morgan, Chairman of Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Merchant Seafarers have played a significant role in this country’s history and continue to be vital to the success of our island nation today.

“It was an honour to be able to raise the flag as a visible show of our support.”
