NEW speed bumps in a residential road in Malvern Link are attracting the ire of drivers and local people.

The traffic-calming measures were put in place at Church Road, which links Upper Howsell Road and Lower Howsell Road, two weeks ago - but have already been the subject of complaints.

Taxi driver Sue Penny, who has many customers in the area, says that residents and drivers alike detest the new bumps.

She said: "There are seven of them, and they are too steep and too close together. A 20mph limit has been put in place as well."

"When the cars go over the bumps, there is a real jerk. My elderly customer really hate it and a lot of them ask me to avoid Church Road and take them the long way around when I'm taking them to the shops in the Link.

"There is the problem of noise as well, especially at night. Residents say that when the wheels of cars and lorries go over the bumps, it makes lot of noise and some say they can't sleep because of it.

"It's no good for cars either. It's wrecking them when the wheels go over the bumps and hit the road surface. It's wrecking the residents' peace as well.

"I know there has to be traffic calming, but these speed bumps are just wrong."

A county council spokesperson said: "These speed bumps were installed in Church Road to support the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, including those travelling to school and other amenities in the area.

"The speed bumps have been made to Department for Transport specifications."
