BOSSES have agreed to look for a way to keep a 24-hour cashpoint open after a town's last bank shuts.

Lloyds Bank managers met with an MP and business representatives to address their concerns about the closure of the branch in Upton.

Over 900 people have signed a petition against the closure, which is scheduled to take place on October 15.

Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, said: "I am grateful that Lloyds came to meet local representatives face to face to hear some of the major concerns that have arisen as the bank consults on the decision to close its Upton branch.

“The discussions were full and frank and I am pleased that the bank is taking steps to speak to each of its customers to identify what the local issues are.

“However it is clear that the bank has underestimated the problems caused by the loss of the cashpoint what this may do to the tourist trade.

“The bank has pledged to re-look at this and to identify a way to keep a cashpoint machine operational 24 hours a day.

“I will be following up with the bank on several of the points raised during the meeting and we will make further announcements on this matter in due course.”

Lloyds previously said it decided to shut the branch because of a change in banking methods, which has resulted in declining use.

A Lloyds Bank spokesman added: "We are grateful to Harriett Baldwin for inviting us to meet in Upton to discuss the closure of our local Lloyds Bank branch.

"At this meeting, we re-confirmed that our new mobile branch service will be visiting Upton and will be on the road before the branch closes, and that customers can access a range of banking services at the local Post Office. We also discussed the issue of ATM provision in Upton.”

Upton's Lloyds branch currently opens three days a week.
