A FUNDRAISING race night at a Malvern town centre hotel raised more than £6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The event was organised by A J Baine, owner of the Mount Pleasant, Belle Vue Terrace, and his team, who aimed to raise £6,000 for the charity.

Macmillan's fundraising manager for Worcestershire, Sarah Diston, was delighted to find that the event was not only a complete sell-out but also smashed the target to raise £6,295.

She said: "A J wanted to support Macmillan because of the support his grandfather received when he was diagnosed with cancer. So, I was over the moon for A J when he rang and told me how much they raised, because I know how hard they all worked behind the scenes to make sure guests had a memorable evening.

“The money raised from the race night could pay for a Macmillan cancer nurse specialist for nearly seven weeks, which is amazing.”

Mr Bains said: "Our grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and, it was a horrific time for the family and so difficult for everyone to come to terms with. We cannot be more thankful and grateful for Macmillan’s help, guidance and service throughout this time. We just wanted to give something back.

“Susanne, the nurse assigned to grandad, was invaluable. She would visit every day, providing information, support and reassurance every step of the way. Within four hours, Susanne had arranged for a bed, oxygen and a chair to be delivered so grandad could come home.

“We all feel Macmillan went above and beyond what was expected, but what we are most thankful for is when Susanne recognised grandad was very close to the end. This gave us some time to call other family members so they too could say their goodbyes and we could all be with him in his final hours."
