PROTESTERS against a plan to build holiday lodges in a woodland near Malvern held a torchlit vigil on the site.

The Three Counties Agricultural Society has applied for permission to build the lodges in Langdale Wood, just across the road from the main showground site.

But the idea has drawn fierce objections from walkers and nature-lovers who say the development would spoil a much-loved walking spot and wildlife haven.

A petition opposing the application has attracted more than 1,600 signers.

Sharon Taylor of the Save Langdale Wood group said: "The vigil went really well. About 30 people came, we sang carols and made mulled wine and hot chocolate and we lit the space with candles.

"We said we will make it a yearly event if we save the wood.

"What we would really like now is for Langdale Wood to be approved as a civic amenity, and for the Three Counties Agricultural Society to offer the land to be managed by a group such as Malvern Community Forest.

"It would need local people to get behind it financially to make it work, but would be a fantastic gesture by Three Counties in this year of the Woodland Trusts Forest Charter."
