A RAIL traveller has hit out at authorities for not clearing snow from a platform at Malvern Link station during the recent cold spell.

Anne De Saint Hubert of Hornyold Road said that the Birmingham-bound platform had not been cleared of snow, and nor had its access ramp from Osborne Road.

She said that on Wednesday, December 13, three days after the big snowfall, she and her 84-year-old mother visited the station to catch a train to Birmingham, en route to Brussels.

She said: "The ramp to the platform was completely covered in snow which had become ice, and the same was true of the platform.

"It was extremely difficult to walk on, and my husband slipped and fell as he was trying to help us with our luggage.

"People were really sliding around, and what would have happened if someone slid off the platform just as a train was coming in? They would have had a leg amputated or worse.

"This was on the Wednesday, so they should have cleared at least part of the platform, as they did on the other platform.

"We pay high enough prices to travel, so the least they can do is make sure it is safe."

A West Midlands Railway spokesman said: “We apologise to all our passengers who were inconvenienced by the heavy snow falls last week. We worked hard to clear 150 stations as soon as our staff could get into work.

"A team tackled Malvern Link on the Sunday but a second fall of snow came on the Monday making matters worse."
