ANIMAL charity the RSPCA celebrated the first birthday of its Worcester rescue centre today (Sunday), with members of the public turning out to join in with the festivities.

Dozens of people descended on the RSPCA Worcester & Mid-Worcestershire’s Rescue & Rehoming Centre at The Holdings in Broomhall for the birthday party, which took place from noon to 3pm.

They took along treats for the cats based at The Holdings, although there weren’t as many feline friends able to meet the public as planned due to an outbreak of a suspected virus among the animals.

The centre was created after grants and donations from various organisations and the public, following an appeal by the RSPCA which was supported by the Worcester News.

Geraldine Haynes, branch trustee, said: “We’re all delighted with how the first year has gone.

“We have rehomed 228 cats and kittens since last October and our cattery is still full with those cats most in need from throughout our branch area.

“With everyone’s help we are going from strength to strength.

“All that has been achieved has only been possible with the help of our amazing supporters, not to mention our wonderful team, our fantastic volunteers, Asda Worcester – for hosting our food collection basket – and everyone else who has played a part.”

Members of The Holdings team were also offering guided tours of the new rabbit and small animal unit, which has recently been built.

There are plans to create accommodation for dogs at the centre.
