REMAINERS have posted their 'stinky' socks to a pub boss who told Brexit critics to 'put a sock in it'.

Tim Martin, the chairman of JD Wetherspoon, has said he often wears odd socks and welcomes the free clothing.

The head of the national pub chain warned Brexit 'gloomsters' to 'put a sock in it' in a statement released on Wednesday, 12 July.

Many pro-EU campaigners were offended by his remark and started posting socks to Mr Martin at his company headquarters.

Some members of Worcestershire For Europe joined the campaign after seeing a Facebook post by British adventurer Graham Hughes, which encouraged the deliveries.

A 62-year-old member of the group, who lives in Worcester but declined to be named, said: "As a passionate Remainer I object to being told to 'put a sock in it'.

"To the best of my knowledge this still a democratic country and so I am still at liberty to voice my opinion, as is Mr Martin.

"The phrase is at best an affront to democracy [and] at worst just plain rude. I wonder what he spends all his millions on to be welcoming smelly odd socks as clothes!"

A spokesman for Worcestershire For Europe, who refused to be named, said: "Many of us in Worcestershire were not very impressed by Tim Martin in this rather low brow comment on the dire political situation currently happening in this country.

"So we decided to reply in kind by sending him some very old, manky, fishy or cheesy socks for him to put a sock in it himself.

"Some people have also been leaving gifts of old socks in his pubs just to make the point.

"Meanwhile colleagues from Watford left him a nice flag and sock offering at his headquarters."

Mr Martin said: ā€œIā€™m known for my lack of sartorial elegance and often wear odd socks, so free clothes are always welcome.ā€
